Available potential vorticity and wave-averaged quasi-geostrophic flow

چکیده
We derive a wave-averaged potential vorticity equation describing the evolution of strongly stratified, rapidly rotating quasi-geostrophic (QG) flow in a field of inertia-gravity internal waves. The derivation relies on a multiple-time-scale asymptotic expansion of the Eulerian Boussinesq equations. Our result confirms and extends the theory of Bühler & McIntyre (J. Fluid Mech., vol. 354, 1998, pp. 609–646) to non-uniform stratification with buoyancy frequency N(z) and therefore non-uniform background potential vorticity f0N(z), and does not require spatial-scale separation between waves and balanced flow. Our interest in non-uniform background potential vorticity motivates the introduction of a new quantity: ‘available potential vorticity’ (APV). Like Ertel potential vorticity, APV is exactly conserved on fluid particles. But unlike Ertel potential vorticity, linear internal waves have no signature in the Eulerian APV field, and the standard QG potential vorticity is a simple truncation of APV for low Rossby number. The definition of APV exactly eliminates the Ertel potential vorticity signal associated with advection of a non-uniform background state, thereby isolating the part of Ertel potential vorticity available for balanced-flow evolution. The effect of internal waves on QG flow is expressed concisely in a wave-averaged contribution to the materially conserved QG potential vorticity. We apply the theory by computing the wave-induced QG flow for a vertically propagating wave packet and a mode-one wave field, both in vertically bounded domains.

Surface quasi-geostrophic dynamics
The dynamics of quasi-geostrophic flow with uniform potential vorticity reduces to the evolution of buoyancy, or potential temperature, on horizontal boundaries. There is a formal resemblance to two-dimensional flow, with surface temperature playing the role of vorticity, but a different relationship between the flow and the advected scalar creates several distinctive features. A series of exam...

A two level quasi-geostrophic model for zonally averaged conditions has been integrated for a period of a few years. The model is forced by Newtonian heating and has internal and surface friction. The interaction between the zonal flow and the eddies is simulated through the use of exchange coefficients for the transports of quasi-geostrophic potential vorticity and sensible heat. The results o...
متن کاملHopf Bifurcation in Quasi-geostrophic Channel Flow
In this article, we conduct a rigorous stability and bifurcation analysis for a highly idealized model of planetary-scale, atmospheric and oceanic flows. The model is governed by the twodimensional, quasi-geostrophic equation for the conservation of vorticity in an East–West oriented, periodic channel. The main result is the existence of Hopf bifurcation of the flow as the Reynolds number cross...
متن کاملQuasi-geostrophic diagnosis of the influence of vorticity advectionon the development of upper level jet-front systems
A partition of the geostrophic vorticity into shear and curvature components is employed to consider the influence of differential vorticity advection on the development of upper level jet-front systems in northwesterly flow in an idealized and an observed case. The analysis reveals that negative geostrophic shear vorticity advection by the thermal wind, inextricably coincident with regions of ...
متن کاملLinear Baroclinic Instability in Extended Regime Geostrophic Models
The linear wave and baroclinic instability properties of various geostrophic models valid when the Rossby number is small are investigated. The models are the ‘‘L1’’ dynamics, the ‘‘geostrophic potential vorticity’’ equations, and the more familiar quasigeostrophic and planetary geostrophic equations. Multilayer shallow water equations are used as a control. The goal is to determine whether the...
